Research estimates that over 400 million more poison-containing computers are becoming obsolete every year, and many of these technological discards are now burning and decaying in landfills both in the US and abroad. Accounting for almost 4% of the municipal solid waste stream, electronic waste is the fastest growing segment of our waste.
The raw materials in these electronics we need and use every day contain the deadliest of hazardous materials. Lead, mercury, arsenic, cadmium and brominated flame retardants are just a few of the toxins in these materials. And worse, when the waste is burned in unregulated landfills, more toxins such as dioxins and others are created.
Historically, many electronics recyclers ignored the impact not only on the environment, but also on the laborers in undeveloped areas working in unsafe and toxic conditions.
As citizens of this planet, it is incumbent on all of us to protect our environment. ecycle aggressively monitors not only our internal processes, but also our downstream partners to ensure all electronic waste is recycled through safe and environmentally responsible processes.
